Having a female as one of the leads in a movie can be a very smart thing to do. Not only will a big budget star like Scarlett Johansson bring her string of fans along too watch the movie it will also attract every man in the world as a very attractive lead female is a good object of desire and everyone wants to see her.
However on the other hand a women can be represented as a weak character so she needs a "hero" to come and save her because she cant protect herself; this is very stereotypical. Women can pose as pure and innocent because men underestimate them, they feel like they could beat a women at everything so it a production company wanted a misleading character they would probably choose a female as their lead character. Things you would expect to see a female role doing in a thriller movie is:
- Limited clothing
- Make up all the time
- usually armed with weapons
- Are single so they can attract male lead
- strong minded
- independent
- a fighter
- intelligent
This is all part Mulvey's theory as the "Male Gaze" that women are just there for men to have something to look at and to be honest some character do go over the top with the skimpy clothes and make up. It is very stereotypical of everyone and not all movies do this sort of thing as it just happens their leads are attractive or fit so there are many films out there that go against the normal conventions.
